IT organizations are implementing service management models, specifically ITIL. If the project has been underway for some time, then there are already advantages to life cycle management for assets, including software. Software has unique challenges for service management because efforts to achieve a particular service level cannot forget to maintain license compliance at the same time. Standards on how to build for software compliance in a servcie maangement environment will help provide a common structure and ISO/IEC 19770-1 is the first standard that ISO has developed specifically for software asset management.
